What is it about a Smile?

I was recently in a store with Hannah and people were trying to get her to smile and trying to attract her attentioin. Why is it that strangers take a liking to children and babies? Why do strangers talk to these little people? Why don't we as adults talk to other adults as we do so freely to children and babies? This got me thinking...Maybe we should...Or should I say, I should?
The definition of smile; "a facial expression characterized by an upward curving of the corners of the mouth and indicating pleasure, amusement, or derision." (American Heritage Dictionary)

A smile gives me pleasure. I know that every day that Hannah wakes up and smiles at me gives me such unconditional love and pleasure. It is the high light of my day. It is also the source of much of my entertainment these days. I am consumed with making her smile, I could just gobble her up. Of course I have been on the island at my Mom's all week and Hannah is my stimulation while Mom is at work.

My Mom's thought on this question; "Is it because babies and children don't judge others?" To further this, I thought "Do we get so caught up in the daily world of "doing" that we don't take in the adults of this world?" "Do we hold too much accountability to adults and their actions that we have so many inhibitions that we cannot interact as freely?"
My day involves this little person who brightens it with her smiles. It is an indicator that she is happy which in turn makes Jay and I happy. I wonder why I don't try to get Jay to smile as often as I do Hannah. One of the things I loved about Jay from the start was his smile and don't get me wrong I still do.... But why don't we entertain ourselves with as many smiles as we do with this little person? She brings so much joy and liveliness in her interactions.

Knowing how much a smile can bring me joy from my daughter and my husband I would like to attempt to make others smile as much and share in the wealth of pleasure and joy we have these days. That to me is the best gift we can give one another and to the adults of this world. Jay thought this was a little deep but I thought it was thought provoking.....

Definately thought provoking, and very very true... I love the feeling I get when I pass someone on the street, and for no reason they smile at me or say hello. People are so often in their own world, and too taken with their own lives to realize that a simple smile may make someones day.. like mine or yours.... but especially lonely elderly people. I find, if I smile and say hello to an elderly person, they respond greatly, like I've just made their day.... I love that. Thanks for the thoughts... I'm going to go smile my way around the office.... :)

Yeah, that was pretty deep. I know what you mean though. I smile at everyone and always say Hi! Adam thinks I'm crazy, but I just can't help it. I used to say Hi to random people in the airport when I worked there... A smile can speak more words than anyone can in the same amount of time...Know what I mean?
And quite honestly, there is nothing better than a smile from your children to melt you into a heap of love!!
